Alexander Ovechkin, the 40-year-old star forward, is set to spend his final season with the Washington Capitals after the team announced plans to adjust its salary cap structure. According to journalist Elliott Friedman, who reported on June 25, the Capitals are expected to take one or two additional steps to free up space under the salary cap in order to secure Ovechkin’s continued presence.
Ovechkin, who turned 40 this year, will enter his 21st season with the NHL and his final season under the current contract with Washington. The forward has been a cornerstone of the Capitals since his debut in the league.
In an April 20 announcement, Brian McLellan, President of Hockey Operations for the Capitals, highlighted Ovechkin’s immense impact on the team. McLellan noted that the player’s agreement remains valid through the end of the 2025-26 season. Previously, Ovechkin stated he would decide on his future career path in the summer.
The forward has also earned a PhD in pedagogical sciences, where his dissertation examined differences in youth athlete training between Russia and North America.
