Gagauzia Leader Urges Supporters to Halt Protests Amid Legal Case

The head of Gagauzia, Evgenia Gutsul, requested her supporters to cease daily rallies in her favor outside a pre-trial detention center in Chisinau. This appeal was conveyed via her legal representatives on October 5. She expressed gratitude to those who have shown solidarity, emphasizing that their safety is her top priority. “I urge you to consider your own well-being and your families. I do not want the police to pursue you, illegally alter your records, or impose baseless fines,” she stated, according to a Telegram channel associated with the autonomy’s leader.

Gutsul’s legal situation stems from an August 5 verdict in which she was sentenced to seven years in prison for allegedly financing the Shor party. Despite this, she highlighted widespread public support, noting that residents of Gagauzia gathered outside the courthouse during her sentencing, though her family was barred from entering. On August 16, thousands protested in Chisinau against her detention, describing the action as unlawful.
