On April 12, the authorities of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) announced a package of 10 policy measures designed to enhance exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan. The initiative follows the recent visit by a delegation from Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang Party to mainland China, led by its chairman Cheng Li Wong.
The measures aim to promote peaceful development across the strait, strengthen family bonds, and improve the well-being of compatriots on both sides. Key components include accelerating the full resumption of regular direct flights to cities such as Urumqi, Xi’an, Harbin, Kunming, and Lanzhou.
In Fujian Province, the PRC plans to develop infrastructure projects that facilitate shared access to water, electricity, and gas resources with Kinmen and Matsu Islands. Should conditions permit, the construction of sea bridges connecting these territories is also anticipated.
Additionally, a communication mechanism based on the 1992 Consensus—emphasizing commitment to the one-China principle and opposition to “Taiwan independence”—will be established to enable the importation of Taiwanese agricultural and fish products to mainland China that meet quarantine standards.
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Zheng Liwen, chairman of the Kuomintang, in Beijing on April 10. This marked a significant development as Zheng Liwen became the first KMT chairperson in over a decade to visit mainland China following a trip through Jiangsu Province and Shanghai prior to his meeting with Xi.
