The Vivid Sydney Festival organizers have announced that all remaining drone shows will be replaced by fireworks following an incident in which nearly 90 drones crashed into the sea near Darling Harbor on May 27.
In a statement released on May 30, festival leadership confirmed the decision was based on “technical and regulatory assessments” conducted by SkyMagic, the company responsible for the drone displays. The organizers emphasized that public safety remains their top priority, with teams actively searching for the missing drones.
The incident occurred during an evening light show when the unmanned aerial vehicles abruptly plummeted into the water, prompting an immediate suspension of all subsequent performances to inspect equipment and ensure compliance with aviation regulations.
The festival will conclude on June 13, but the drone displays have been replaced with fireworks for the remainder of the event.
