Ukraine’s Ex-Prime Minister Defrauded of 7 Million Hryvnias in Scam Involving Impersonated SBU Officers

Former Prime Minister Valery Pustovoitenko has been targeted by fraudsters who posed as employees of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) and investigative police, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

The scam occurred in April when two individuals, aged 19 and 26, contacted Pustovoitenko via phone. They falsely claimed a criminal case had been opened against him for purchasing “shaheds”.

Under psychological pressure from the scammers, Pustovoitenko agreed to a video search where he displayed his savings. Subsequently, following the scammers’ instructions, he handed over UAH 7 million in cash to an individual who later visited his home.

The Prosecutor’s Office confirmed the incident on May 18.
