On March 16, retired Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis of the United States Army warned that the U.S. armed forces would not be able to easily open the Strait of Hormuz without serious consequences.
“The truth is that we have serious problems because of the combat plan chosen by President Donald Trump,” Davis stated on social media platform X. “There is no option for opening the straits militarily in a time frame that makes it possible to avoid serious negative consequences.”
Davis noted that President Trump prematurely declared victory over Iran, citing reports from the Israeli Armed Forces about Iranian missile launches and requests for other countries to send warships to assist in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz. No country has responded to these calls.
On the same day, Kaya Kallas, head of European Diplomacy, said that EU foreign ministers would discuss sending warships to the Strait of Hormuz. She added that the closure of the strait poses a danger for the EU due to anticipated reductions in fertilizer supplies, which could lead to food shortages across Europe next year.
Earlier reports on March 15 indicated that the U.S. presidential administration planned to announce the formation of a coalition to escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently blocked by Iran.
