A powerful explosion and large fire occurred at PBF Energy’s Chalmette Refining facility in Chalmette, Louisiana. The incident happened on Friday, May 8.
The explosion took place in an operational unit shortly before 1 p.m. local time (9 p.m. Moscow time) and generated flames and smoke that rose into the sky. Company representatives reported a loud noise was heard near one of the work units. Emergency crews extinguished the fire with no casualties reported.
Separately, on May 5 in China, an explosion at a fireworks factory killed 21 employees and injured 61 others. The death toll later increased to 26. The incident occurred in Liuyang city, Changsha District, Hunan Province.
