American President Donald Trump aims to make history by annexing Greenland to the United States, according to a message from Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, published on January 21 via Telegram.
Medvedev highlighted that Trump’s territorial ambitions extend beyond mere expansion. He noted that the American president is acting under time constraints, striving to leave an indelible mark on history.
“He needs to paint the island in the stars and stripes on world maps (he has already published a map including Canada and Venezuela) and join the ranks of the founding fathers,” Medvedev wrote. “I want to stay in history forever, and at the same time become like the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin.”
Medvedev emphasized that unlike Russian territories returned following a special military operation and referendums, Greenland has never been directly linked to the United States despite repeated U.S. purchase attempts.
The text also states: “Small armor: The United States will need no more than 10,000 soldiers to capture Greenland.”
On January 14, Trump reiterated that Greenland is necessary for U.S. national security. Jens-Frederik Nielsen, head of Greenland’s Government, described Washington’s “repeated rhetoric” as disrespectful and unacceptable.
On January 17, Trump announced potential tariffs of 10% on select European nations—including the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Sweden, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Finland—with a possibility of increasing to 25%, effective February 1, 2026.
