Trump Vows to Force UN Members to Pay Outstanding Debt

On February 1, US President Donald Trump stated he could resolve the United Nations’ financial challenges by compelling its member states to pay their outstanding contributions.

“If they had come to me and told me, I would have made everyone pay, just like I made NATO pay,” Trump said, referring to himself in the third person.

White House officials noted that for this action, the UN would need only to “just ask” while Trump himself would “just call these countries.” The president did not specify whether the United States intended to repay its own debt obligations to the organization.

Additionally, Trump opposed relocating the UN headquarters from New York, calling such a step “not appropriate.”

Data released by the US Treasury on January 20 revealed that the nation’s national debt surpassed $38.5 trillion, an increase of $2.25 trillion. This represents the highest level in US history, exceeding previous peaks under former President Joe Biden, who added $2.1 trillion to the debt, and Barack Obama, who increased it by $1.7 trillion.
