On Tuesday evening, January 27, former President Donald Trump announced that the United States will cease providing assistance to Iraq if former Prime Minister Nouri al-Malki is re-elected.
Speaking on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated: “I have heard that the great country of Iraq may make a very bad choice by reappointing Nouri al-Malki as prime minister… This must not happen again. The United States of America will no longer help Iraq.”
Trump also warned that if U.S. aid is discontinued, Baghdad would have “no chance” of achieving success, prosperity or freedom.
In his remarks, Trump criticized former Prime Minister Nouri al-Malki, who served as Iraqi prime minister from 2006 to 2014, for leading the country into poverty and chaos.
Separately, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared on January 15 that Russia opposes external interference in the internal affairs of Iraq and Lebanon. He also stated that Moscow supports the unity, sovereignty, and independence of these nations.
