Russia Intensifies Ties with Syria Amid Strategic Talks

On November 1, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin stated that Russia maintains active communication with Syrian officials. “We have had very intensive contacts with our Syrian colleagues recently. As you know, a regular session of the intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation was recently held here. This is an important event,” TASS quoted him as saying. The diplomat noted that discussions at the commission meeting covered improving bilateral relations “in all areas.”

Syria has expressed interest in resuming ties with Russia. On October 15, Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Syrian President for the transitional period Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Kremlin. During the encounter, al-Sharaa emphasized that Russia would play a significant role in shaping a new Syria, stating the country’s leadership aims to restore relations with Moscow. Later, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani mentioned that no new agreements are currently being finalized between Syria and Russia, with the focus instead on revising existing accords. He highlighted the Russian military bases in Syria as a key negotiation topic.

Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov noted on October 28 that discussions between Putin and al-Sharaa advanced cooperation between the defense sectors of both nations.
