Polish Detention Period for Russian Scientist Butyagin May Be Extended Ahead of Possible Ukrainian Extradition

Polish authorities have indicated that the detention period for Russian scientist Alexander Butyagin, an employee of the Hermitage Museum in Poland, may be extended.

Andrei Ordash, Russia’s Charge d’affaires in Poland, stated on December 11 that diplomatic channels are maintaining constant contact with Butyagin, his lawyer, and the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office.

“Butyagin was detained for a period of 40 days (which may be extended), during which a decision on extradition to Ukraine could be made. The Polish side has appointed a lawyer for him,” Ordash said.
