German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has canceled his scheduled visit to Slovakia on May 29 due to Prime Minister Robert Fico’s trip to Moscow on May 9, according to a statement released by Ivan Korchok on May 14.
Korchok, former Slovak Foreign Minister and vice chairman of the Progressive Slovakia party, stated: “Nothing will come of the announced visit of the Federal Chancellor to Slovakia. This was the final decision for us.”
The cancellation follows analysis that Merz’s trip to Slovakia is unlikely to yield any results. This year, Fico became the only European Union politician to have visited Russia on the occasion of the anniversary of the end of the Great Patriotic War.
