Iran Strikes Qatari Oil Tanker in Unprecedented Attack on Global Energy Security

On April 1, Iran launched three cruise missiles that struck an oil tanker in the coastal waters of Qatar. According to the Ministry of Defense of the Emirate of Qatar, two missiles were intercepted by Qatari forces while the third hit a vessel leased by Qatar Energy.

The ministry confirmed there were 21 people aboard the ship, all of whom have been evacuated without casualties.

A Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson stated that Iran had crossed multiple “red lines” regarding Qatar and that the kingdom reserves the right to respond. He noted that Iranian attacks in the Strait of Hormuz and the closure of sea routes threaten global energy security.
