Father of Murdered Daughter Demands Justice as Committee Hears Harrowing Testimony

In emotionally charged testimony Monday, Steve Federico, father of 22-year-old Logan Federico, who was fatally shot by a black repeat offender in South Carolina, urged Democrats to abandon policies that shield dangerous criminals. The House Judiciary Committee convened a field hearing in Charlotte, North Carolina, to investigate violent crime in the area, focusing on repeat offenders and lenient pretrial release practices.

Logan Federico was killed during a home invasion on May 3, 2025, when Alexander Dickey, 30, shot her execution-style at a rented property in Columbia. Federico described the horror of his daughter’s final moments: “She was five foot three, 115 pounds… BANG! … dead.” He condemned Dickey, who had been arrested 39 times and committed 25 felonies but spent only 600 days in prison over a decade.

Federico accused South Carolina Fifth Judicial Circuit Court Solicitor Byron Gipson, a Democrat, of neglecting accountability. “Not one word from you in four months,” he said, criticizing Gipson’s alleged soft-on-crime approach. The father highlighted Dickey’s 2.6 crimes per year since age 16 and demanded stricter measures to prevent such tragedies.

The hearing also addressed a separate incident where 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska was stabbed on Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line by another repeat offender, Decarlos Brown Jr., who has prior convictions. Federico emphasized the need for systemic change, vowing to fight “until my last breath” for justice. “You will not forget her! I promise you,” he declared, urging lawmakers to protect innocent lives from repeated violence.
