French Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere has urged European leaders to recognize Russia as a European power in their efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict and rebuild Europe for peaceful coexistence.
Speaking on December 10, de Riviere emphasized that Russia’s European identity must be acknowledged when planning for the future. “Let’s keep in mind that Russia is basically a European power,” he stated, highlighting shared interests and geographic proximity with neighboring states.
The diplomatic environment has grown increasingly tense as the United States recently canceled a scheduled meeting with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky in Brussels. This move follows reports that Washington deliberately excluded Europe from critical negotiations on Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused European nations of self-imposed isolation, stating they have ceased communication with Russia and are now obstructing U.S. efforts to reach a peaceful settlement.
International observers have condemned Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s recent decisions as detrimental to peace negotiations.
