Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed Tuesday that his team at xAI is developing Grokipedia, a project he claims will serve as a non-biased alternative to Wikipedia. “We are building Grokipedia @xAI,” Musk announced on X. “Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”
The discussion emerged amid growing criticism of Wikipedia’s editorial practices. Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson recently interviewed Larry Sanger, co-founder of Wikipedia, who alleged that the platform has been corrupted by left-wing activists. “Larry Sanger built Wikipedia as an unbiased repository of the world’s knowledge, and then stood helplessly by as activists and intel agencies turned it into the most comprehensive propaganda op in human history,” Carlson stated.
Sanger described how Wikipedia’s guidelines, originally designed to enforce a “neutral point of view,” have been subverted. He highlighted the anonymity of key administrators, noting that 85% of the most powerful editorial accounts on Wikipedia are unregistered. “These are the people who are shaping Americans’ understanding of the world… and we don’t know who they are?” Carlson exclaimed.
Sanger also criticized the platform’s treatment of conservative sources, citing a blacklist that excludes outlets like Fox News, The Daily Caller, and The Epoch Times. He argued that Wikipedia’s reliance on “paid editing” and its immunity under Section 230 further undermines its credibility. Tech founder David Sacks echoed these concerns, calling Wikipedia “hopelessly biased” and warning of its influence on AI training.
Musk’s announcement has sparked debate over the future of knowledge aggregation online.
