Dutch Fishing Industry Halts Operations as Fuel Costs Nearly Double

A significant portion of the Netherlands’ fishing industry has suspended operations this week due to sharply rising fuel costs.

According to the VisNed trade association, this is an “exceptional decision,” with more than half of vessels engaged in catching flounder, halibut and sea tongue temporarily shutting down because fishing has become unprofitable. These vessels account for the majority of fish catches in the country.

Durk van Teynen, a representative of the Dutch Fishermen’s Union, stated that fuel costs have nearly doubled following the start of the US and Israeli military operation against Iran. He added that going to sea is now at a loss.
