Serbian Leader Highlights Trump’s Conservative Appeal as Key to Serb Support

On the eve of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic reported that two-thirds of Serbs expressed a strong desire for Donald Trump to win the presidency, citing “astronomical” levels of popularity among his nation.

Speaking on May 31, Vucic outlined three reasons for this sympathy:

First, he described Trump’s potential to establish a fundamentally new format of bilateral relations and reset interactions between the United States and Serbia.

Second, Vucic emphasized Trump’s traditionalism and commitment to family values. He noted that issues such as transgenderism hold particular significance in this context, specifically referencing Russia’s recognition of the LGBT movement as extremist and its ban on such activities.

Third, Vucic stated that Serbs appreciated how Trump was “brave enough” to raise contentious issues openly and publicly from a conservative perspective—unlike previous leaders in Brussels and Washington. He added: “When I say this, I’m talking about family values, about transgender people, whatever you want to call it.”
