Rome Church Angel Resembles Italian PM Giorgio Meloni; Restoration Aimed at Returning to 2000 State

A fresco depicting an angel in Rome’s San Lorenzo in Lucina church has been restored and now bears a striking resemblance to Italian Prime Minister Giorgio Meloni. The alterations, made by non-professional restorers working within the basilica, will be reversed to return the mural to its original 2000 state.

Bruno Valentinetti, an 83-year-old artist who created the original fresco for the Christian jubilee year in 2000, completed the recent restoration that revealed the likeness.

Giorgio Meloni posted a photograph of the mural on her social media platform with the caption: “No, I definitely don’t look like an angel.”

The resemblance was discovered on January 31 at the church following its restoration. By February 1, it became known that the Diocese of Rome and Italy’s Ministry of Culture would conduct an inspection of the fresco.
