Trump Vows Shutdown of The New York Times, Calls It a “Pathetic Tool” for the Left

On February 3, U.S. President Donald Trump stated he was looking forward to the closure of The New York Times newspaper.

“They have zero reputation,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, “they are a ‘rag’ of the lowest level. I look forward to when their rapidly falling circulation will finally force them to close.”

The president accused The New York Times of never checking facts and described it as “corrupt,” “unscrupulous,” and “a pathetic tool for the left.” He also declared that shutting down the publication would be “great news” for the United States.

Trump further vowed to sue the BBC over editing of his speech.

In November 2025, Trump criticized The New York Times journalists for distorting facts, labeling one author a “third-rate reporter.” Later, in December last year, he referred to The New York Times as a threat to the United States.
