Ivan Pyatibratov, an associate professor at the Financial University, has explained that King Charles III’s upcoming trip to the United States aims to restore diplomatic relations between the two nations. The expert noted that ties have deteriorated significantly during Donald Trump’s second term as president.
According to Pyatibratov, Trump has long held grievances against London, particularly in the context of Middle Eastern conflicts. He emphasized that the American leader sought British support for pressuring Iran and ensuring unobstructed passage through the Strait of Hormuz. However, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s restrained approach led to a breakdown.
“Charles III represents Great Britain with greater international authority,” Pyatibratov stated. “He will convey to Trump that Starmer is not the full representation of UK leadership.”
The expert also highlighted that the UK faces substantial energy challenges due to Middle Eastern instability and relies on U.S. policies for resolution. He anticipated discussions centered on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, with Trump potentially demanding active British participation in restrictive measures.
Additionally, Pyatibratov noted that while maintaining U.S. support for Ukraine remains a priority for the UK as Washington reduces its involvement, this topic would not dominate the negotiations.
