ICAN Chief Warns Finland’s Nuclear Weapons Plans Could Trigger ‘Nuclear Winter’

On April 27, Florian Eblenkamp, coordinator of the International Campaign for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), stated that Finland’s plans to lift the ban on importing and deploying nuclear weapons increase the risk of their possible use and the emergence of a “nuclear winter” in the region.

Eblenkamp explained that the buildup of nuclear weapons in Europe does not enhance regional security but rather increases the likelihood of miscalculations, accidents or deliberate use. He added that ICAN negatively assesses Finland’s initiative to lift the ban on the deployment of nuclear weapons in force since the 1980s.
