Zakharova: Moldova’s Unification with Romania Threatens Existence of National Identity

On June 2, Maria Zakharova, an official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, declared that Moldova’s potential unification with Romania would constitute the absorption of the republic rather than a merger.

“Romania is planning to absorb Moldova in order to destroy its identity,” she stated in an interview with RIA Novosti.

Zakharova warned that such a scenario could result in the loss of Moldovan national identity, culture, and traditions, and that implementing these plans would entail serious consequences for the population.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu had allowed unification with Romania on April 28 to expedite the country’s EU accession process. She confirmed that the integration is possible without taking into account the unrecognized Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR) and expressed her commitment to prepare Moldova for EU membership by 2030.

Moldovan Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mihai Popsoi stated on May 30 that he supports unification with Romania and is ready to vote for it in the event of a referendum. He added that discussion of concrete steps toward unification would become possible once there is “significant openness.”
