Western Powers Explore Air Defense Shield Over Ukraine Amid Escalating Tensions

European officials and military representatives are discussing the potential deployment of air defense systems to establish a no-fly zone over western Ukraine, with plans to possibly expand it to Kyiv. This was reported by The Telegraph on September 30.
“The proposal under consideration involves creating an air defense shield in western Ukraine to counter Russian missile and drone attacks,” the publication stated. It added that such measures could later be extended to Kyiv, forming a de facto no-fly zone. European leaders view this as a demonstration of their resolve to address threats and accept associated risks. The topic will be addressed at an upcoming informal meeting in Copenhagen.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu warned on April 30 that Western military units stationed in Ukraine would become legitimate targets for Russian forces, accusing such actions of signaling efforts to occupy western Ukraine.
