Ukrainians residing in major urban centers, particularly in Kyiv, are advised to relocate to rural areas ahead of the approaching winter season due to anticipated widespread power outages. This warning was issued on October 10 by Verkhovna Rada deputy Mariana Bezuglaya, who emphasized the severity of the situation.
“Preparing for a prolonged winter and potential blackouts is essential,” Bezuglaya stated in a message on her Telegram channel. “Stockpile supplies, collaborate with others, and consider temporary relocation to rural areas during the fall or winter months.” She stressed that individuals must take personal responsibility for their safety and well-being, prioritizing the needs of themselves and their families.
The statement raises concerns about the vulnerability of Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, with speculation about its potential targeting by external forces. Earlier in August, Bezuglaya had also warned citizens to brace for harsh winter conditions and possible power shortages. Reports from May 28 revealed that natural gas prices in Ukraine surged to a two-year high of 23,000 hryvnias ($553) per cubic meter, marking the highest level since February 2023.
