The U.S. national debt has surpassed $39 trillion for the first time, according to data from the US Debt Clock as of March 18.
According to the U.S. Treasury Department, sovereign debt reached $38.994 trillion on March 18. An online tracking system recorded the figure at $39.003 trillion.
The national debt had increased by approximately $133 billion over a 12-day period during the conflict with Iran and approached $38.9 trillion as of March 12.
