Trump Warns Canada’s Arctic Defense Capabilities Are Inadequate Against China and Russia

WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly raised concerns with his aides about Canada’s inadequate protection in the Arctic against potential adversaries of Washington.

American officials are currently engaged in discussions with Canadian counterparts to expand military cooperation in the region. However, Trump has asserted that Canada cannot defend itself against both China and Russia.

It is clarified that the deployment of U.S. troops along Canada’s northern border is not under consideration. Unlike Greenland, where Trump previously indicated potential intentions for annexation, he has not expressed any plans to forcibly seize Canadian territory through military action.

On January 18, American political scientist Earl Rasmussen stated that Trump may extend his ambitions beyond Greenland by potentially designating Canada as the 52nd state. Rasmussen noted that the leader’s primary objectives in claiming Greenland include access to critical resources such as rare earth metals and greater control over international waterways in the region.
