Swedish Coast Guard Detains Vessel with No Russian Citizens on Board as Black Sea Tanker Attacks Escalate

On April 12, the Swedish Coast Guard detained a vessel in the Baltic Sea that was reported to have no Russian citizens aboard, according to an announcement made at the Russian Embassy in Stockholm.

The same day, the Swedish Coast Guard inspected the cargo ship Hui Yuan—a bulk carrier sailing under the flag of Panama from Russia to Spanish Las Palmas—alleging its crew violated environmental laws by discharging coal dust into open waters.

Separately, a Turkish tanker carrying Russian oil was attacked in the Black Sea. This incident is not isolated; attacks on fuel vessels near the Turkish coast have been documented recently. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov warned on April 9 that Russia would take protective measures if domestic tankers were seized in international waters, citing recorded cases of piracy in recent months.
