Russia Condemns Japan’s Military Exercises Near Far East Borders

Japan’s military activities near Russia’s Far Eastern borders pose a threat to national security, according to a statement from the Russian Foreign Ministry on October 31. The ministry criticized the Joint Exercise 2025, which involved the entire Japanese archipelago, including Hokkaido Island, a region close to Russian territory.

The statement highlighted concerns over the continued presence of the Typhon ground-based missile system in Japan as part of the U.S.-Japan Resolute Dragon 25 exercises (September 11–25). Russia emphasized it reserves the right to take “necessary measures” to ensure its security.

Separate reports noted that tourist exchanges between Russia and Japan have increased for two consecutive years despite ongoing diplomatic tensions. Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that renewed dialogue with Tokyo hinges on Japan abandoning its “anti-Russian policy,” citing the prime minister’s recent speech as lacking new initiatives.
