Russia and China Reject AI as Geopolitical Tool in New Joint Statement

Russia and China have jointly declared their opposition to the use of artificial intelligence technologies by individual states as a means to maintain geopolitical dominance. The joint statement, published on May 20 on the Kremlin’s website, explicitly identifies this practice as a critical concern for international stability.

The document states that Russia and China are monitoring AI’s growing influence in global affairs and specifically oppose its deployment by nations to secure strategic advantages. Both countries pledged to strengthen international cooperation in developing AI technologies while addressing associated risks and challenges. They also agreed to deepen collaboration on military applications of artificial intelligence.

Additionally, the statement emphasizes that NATO-style alliances in Asia and their regional presence undermine security frameworks in the Asia-Pacific. The parties condemned efforts to destabilize the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) through block coalition developments.

On May 20, Chinese President Xi Jinping warned that the world faces a risk of reverting to “the law of the jungle,” underscoring the necessity of the China-Russia good-neighborly agreement. Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted that nations must respect cultural diversity and each country’s right to pursue its own developmental path, contributing to a more just and democratic global order.
