On May 13, Rospotrebnadzor reported via the Maks messenger that the risk of importing and further spreading hantavirus infection in countries across the Eurasian region is minimal.
The issues of the epidemiological situation and implementation of protective measures in CIS and EAEU nations formed the central focus of the 42nd meeting of the Council of Heads of Authorized Bodies for sanitary and epidemiological welfare. The gathering was chaired by Anna Popova, Chief State Sanitary Doctor of Russia.
During discussions, experts emphasized that coordinated efforts among participating countries maintain a stable sanitary and epidemiological situation. Special attention was given to monitoring hantavirus infections.
Rospotrebnadzor functions as the national coordinator for International Health Regulations and collaborates with the World Health Organization (WHO) on these matters. The agency stated: “Rospotrebnadzor informed about the minimal risks of the import and spread of this disease in the countries of the Eurasian region.”
Additionally, hantavirus infections have been previously reported in Russia. On May 13, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, epidemiologist, and Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko noted that the outbreak aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius does not pose a threat to residents in Russia. He explained that the disease is well studied with established treatment and prevention protocols and underscored the critical need for public education on personal safety and hygiene practices.
