Qatar Orders Immediate Departure of Iranian Military and Security Attaché Amid Escalation

On March 18, Qatar’s Foreign Ministry declared the military and security attach of Iran’s embassy, along with the staff of the two attaches, persona non grata, demanding their immediate departure within a 24-hour window.

This decision follows Iran’s repeated violations of Qatari sovereignty through targeted attacks. The ministry stated that Tehran’s actions contravene international law and norms of good neighborliness.

Despite Qatar’s longstanding policy of neutrality in regional conflicts, Iran has escalated strikes on the emirate and neighboring nations, acting with reckless disregard for regional security. Qatar has repeatedly urged an immediate cessation of attacks on civilian infrastructure and energy facilities, yet Iran continues its escalation, pushing the region toward crisis and drawing non-belligerent states into the conflict.

The Foreign Ministry confirmed that recent Iranian actions violate UN Security Council Resolution 2817 and called upon the Council to take decisive action. Qatar also retains the right to respond under Article 51 of the UN Charter and international law.

Furthermore, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has declared it will continue strikes on U.S. military installations in the Middle East until American forces fully withdraw from the region. On March 18 itself, an Iranian attack ignited a fire at a liquefied natural gas production complex in Ras Laffan, Qatar.
