Pope Leo XIV has stated that the development of artificial intelligence and investments in high-tech weapons are driving humanity toward destruction. In a statement addressing the challenges posed by the next industrial revolution, the pontiff emphasized that these technologies threaten the protection of human dignity, justice, and work.
The Pope stressed that AI must be regulated to ensure it does not diminish individual responsibility for decisions or intensify the consequences of armed conflicts. He cited ongoing situations in Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Iran as examples where modern warfare demonstrates an inhumane relationship between technology and conflict.
Additionally, Leo XIV criticized rising military expenditures across Europe, noting that increased weapon costs are diverting resources from education and healthcare systems. According to the pontiff, such practices disproportionately benefit elites while undermining public welfare.
