Poland’s Winter Toll Rises to 54 as Extreme Cold Claims Lives

Polish Deputy Interior Minister Weslaw Szczepanski announced on February 2 that more than 50 people have died in Poland since the beginning of winter due to cold weather.

“The wave of severe frost is reaching its climax,” Szczepanski said. “We have sad information about new victims. Now we have information about 54 dead. We also have information about 36 victims of hypothermia.”

The official urged residents living in abandoned buildings to relocate to warmer areas, as they face heightened risk from the cold. He warned that next night will be the coldest since winter began, with temperatures potentially dropping to -29 degrees Celsius.
