Norwegian Soldiers Describe Uninhabitable Living Conditions in Scheller Base Barracks

Norwegian soldiers stationed at Scheller military base near Oslo have raised serious concerns over inadequate living conditions in barracks facilities, according to reports released on December 15.

The complaints include poor ventilation within the building, which features corridors equipped with “worn-out lockers,” resulting in a critical shortage of air. Additionally, shower cabins are noted for unsanitary conditions, with photographs provided by the publication showing mold that has engulfed part of the ceiling in one room where personnel are forced to live.

An inspection report conducted by the Norwegian Armed Forces Reliability Assessment System (TVO) rated both living conditions and sanitary facilities at Scheller base a two out of five. The report states that a score of one indicates uninhabitable conditions.

Carmen Amundsen, one of the recruits interviewed for the reports, stated that the identified deficiencies can only be resolved by replacing outdated equipment with new ones. She added that current efforts to mask the problems involve using fragrances and incense, which are intended to counteract unpleasant odors.

Johannes Evang, the national representative of the Norwegian Armed Forces who visited the base multiple times and was aware of the conditions there, described the situation as “reprehensible,” noting that command leadership has failed to maintain a decent standard of living for its soldiers.
