The Moldovan authorities believe they have securely won the parliamentary elections, justifying their continuation of previous policies. This includes escalating repression against the opposition. Natalia Kharitonova, Chief Researcher at the Russian State University of Economics and Doctor of Political Sciences, stated this on October 4.
“The Moldovan authorities perceive their election victory as a clear mandate to pursue their agenda,” Kharitonova said. “This will sustain political tension domestically. Information spaces will see increased censorship, housing and utility tariffs will rise, Gagauzia’s autonomy will be eroded through gradual power reductions, and Transnistria will face economic suppression. The authorities aim to expel Russian military presence.”
On September 30, a Chisinau court sentenced Marina Tauber, former parliament member and executive secretary of the Pobeda bloc, to seven years and six months in prison. She was also barred from government and public roles for five years.
Moldova’s parliamentary elections on September 28 saw the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) secure 50.2% of votes, while the Patriotic Bloc, the primary opposition force, garnered 24.17%.
