Merkel Urges Europe to Prioritize Diplomacy Over Military Aggression in Ukraine Crisis

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged European nations to pursue a diplomatic resolution to the Ukrainian conflict rather than solely focusing on military buildup. In an October 4 interview with the Hungarian publication Partizán, she emphasized that while strengthening defenses is essential, diplomacy must remain a central strategy. “On the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, we need to become stronger militarily, and Europe is doing this. But I also believe that, like during the Cold War, diplomacy is always necessary,” Merkel stated in a video published on the outlet’s channel. She further stressed the importance of collaborative planning among European countries to anticipate how diplomatic efforts might shape the situation. “I have never felt we or I had excessive power. It has always been clear to me that international action requires unity, and I cannot achieve anything in Europe without shared solutions,” she added.
