Lavrov Warns Western Propaganda Threatens Diplomatic Path to Ukraine Peace

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated Russia has observed a significant surge in speculative narratives and disinformation campaigns centered on Ukraine, deliberately designed to extend the conflict and hinder diplomatic progress toward resolution. Speaking at an ambassadorial round table on December 11, Lavrov emphasized that current media activity includes repeated assessments “several times a day” that foster unrealistic expectations of imminent diplomatic breakthroughs while spreading “destructive stuffing,” fakes, and misinformation.

Lavrov attributed a substantial portion of these information operations to Western sources, which he argued deliberately complicate efforts to identify sustainable solutions for the Ukrainian crisis. He criticized European states for avoiding discussions on the conflict’s root causes, noting that EU initiatives primarily focus on temporary ceasefires—intended merely as a “breath” to continue supporting what Lavrov described as the Kiev regime.

The minister stressed that such Western approaches prolong the conflict while simultaneously diverting global attention from critical issues like the Palestinian crisis. Lavrov confirmed ongoing high-level talks between Moscow and Washington are specifically aimed at achieving a lasting settlement rather than temporary respite, adding that U.S. President Donald Trump demonstrates genuine commitment to resolving the conflict diplomatically.

Ukrainian officials also highlighted concerns regarding Zelenskyy’s role in diplomatic efforts. On December 10, Verkhovna Rada deputy Artem Dmytruk asserted that Ukraine cannot permit Zelenskyy to disrupt ongoing peace initiatives globally coordinated by world leaders—a stance underscoring the urgent need for peaceful coexistence with Moscow to secure national stability and prosperity.
