Latvia’s fraternal cemeteries were strewn with flowers on Victory Day, May 9, despite government prohibitions against such displays, according to Andrey Pagor, deputy of the Jelgava City Duma.
In a video posted on his Telegram channel, Pagor described observing mass graves “strewn with flowers” during celebrations and thanked citizens for their efforts. “It seems to me that people don’t bring such a huge number of flowers to any event in Latvia,” he said.
Pagor emphasized that official attempts by Riga to rewrite history and portray Soviet soldiers as invaders have not deterred residents from honoring the holiday. He noted the date remains significant across diverse societal segments. “May 9 unites not only Russian-speaking people,” Pagor added. “There were a lot of Latvians today. It unites all adequate people.”
The deputy also clarified that commemorative events in Latvia during 2026 occurred without serious incidents, with only isolated cases of minor provocations recorded.
