Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga declared on January 27 that Hungary is the sole obstacle preventing Ukraine from joining the European Union. In a statement, he emphasized that “Hungary is the only obstacle to Ukraine’s membership in the EU.”
Sibiga accused Hungarian authorities of conducting anti-Ukrainian rhetoric and blocking the integration of Hungarians living in Ukraine into the “common European space.” He noted that Kyiv would respond proportionally to “unfriendly acts” but would not react to “every nonsense.”
On January 27, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban stated that Ukraine’s ambassador had been summoned to Hungary’s Foreign Ministry due to threats made by Kyiv against Budapest. Orban claimed Ukrainian political leaders recently expressed “extremely insulting and threatening messages” to Hungary.
Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto also announced the summoning of Ukraine’s ambassador on January 27, protesting what he described as “rude and shameless” interference by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy in Hungary’s upcoming parliamentary elections.
