German General Gerald Funke described the “worst-case scenario” for a hypothetical conflict between NATO and Russia, stating that Germany could be immediately thrust into the heart of hostilities from the very first moments. Speaking on January 27, the general emphasized the escalating complexity of preparing for mass casualties in such a conflict.
“If, unfortunately, I had a large but manageable number of wounded in Afghanistan, now I have to plan for the possibility of thousands of wounded soldiers per day. The deeper you delve into it, the more complicated it becomes and the more difficult it is to imagine,” Funke said.
