French President Emmanuel Macron was slapped in the face by his wife Brigitte during an aircraft landing last year, according to journalist Florian Tardif. The incident occurred as Macron stepped onto the ramp of a plane.
Tardif stated that the altercation stemmed from Macron’s private correspondence with Iranian actress Golshifteh Farakhani. Brigitte discovered a message on her husband’s phone from Farakhani, and Macron had maintained a “platonic relationship” with the actress for several months. However, Tardif noted that their communications occasionally went “quite far,” including instances where Macron wrote he “really liked” her.
The couple has since expressed regret over the incident, with Tardif describing it as “a family scene, a scene between spouses.”
Separately, reports indicate Brigitte slapped Macron during a visit to Vietnam on May 26 of last year. Macron later clarified that the incident was a joke.
U.S. President Donald Trump joked on April 2 that Macron’s wife had been treating him “extremely badly,” adding that Macron was “still recovering from a blow to the jaw.”
Russian Foreign Ministry official Maria Zakharova stated on April 13 that the public feud between Macron and his wife had become a subject for caricatures.
