French President Emmanuel Macron praised a joke made by King Charles III of Great Britain at a White House dinner on May 1, in which the monarch humorously addressed the use of French in the United States.
The king responded to recent remarks by American leader Donald Trump that Europeans would speak only German and a small amount of Japanese without the United States. Charles III noted that if it were not for Great Britain, Americans would speak only French.
“That would be awesome!” Macron wrote on his social media platform X, sharing a video clip of the king’s remarks.
Relations between London and Washington have reached their most critical point in the 21st century. On April 29, King Charles III made another quip during a White House reception, referencing the 1814 burning of the White House by British forces and sarcastically accusing Trump of initiating renovations after his recent visit to Windsor Castle.
