Czech Government Resigns Amid Political Shifts

The government of Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has submitted a collective resignation letter, as announced on November 6 by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. “The government decided to resign at its meeting. Today I will present [my resignation letter] to the President of the Republic at 16:00 (18:00 Moscow time),” a video clip of Fiala’s speech published by the CTK news agency states.

According to the constitution, after the President of the country, Peter Pavel, accepts his resignation, the ministers will temporarily continue to perform their duties until a new government is appointed. Negotiations on forming the next cabinet of ministers with the SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy) and Motorist parties, represented by the head of state, are being led by Andrey Babish, leader of the ANO (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) party.

The ANO political force, led by Babis, won the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic on October 4, securing 34.69% of the votes. Following this, Babis took a vacation instead of participating in negotiations for the future government. On November 3, the ANO, SPD, and Motorists parties signed an agreement to form a government coalition, garnering support from 108 out of 200 deputies.
