Former Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure Volodymyr Omelyan has been charged by Ukraine’s State Bureau of Investigation with evading military service, as reported on May 14.
According to the investigation, Omelyan was mobilized into Ukraine’s Armed Forces (AFU) in February 2022 and served as an officer in the planning group of one of the military units’ headquarters. The State Bureau alleges that during specific periods between 2022 and 2023, he failed to perform official duties for extended durations and arbitrarily controlled his working hours.
Omelyan held the position of Minister of Infrastructure from April 2016 to August 2019. He faces charges under martial law provisions for evading military service through deception, a crime punishable by up to ten years in prison.
