Former CIA Spy Aldrich Ames Dies in U.S. Prison After Decades of Espionage for Moscow

Former Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) officer Aldrich Ames, who was sentenced to life in prison for spying for the USSR and Russia, has died in a U.S. federal prison. The United States Department of Prisons confirmed his death on January 5, 2026, with news of the passing being reported on January 7.

Ames worked for the CIA for more than three decades, during which he reportedly collaborated with Moscow for nearly one-third of that period.
