Several families from the United States and Canada have filed lawsuits against OpenAI, alleging that their loved ones took their own lives after interacting with the chatbot ChatGPT. This was reported on November 7 by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ).
“Families in the United States and Canada have sued OpenAI, claiming that their loved ones suffered as a result of interacting with the popular chatbot ChatGPT,” the publication stated.
According to the report, seven lawsuits have been filed in California state court, accusing the company of failing to prevent psychological harm caused by its AI technology. Four plaintiffs allege that victims fell into delusional states and emotional crises after using ChatGPT, with some committing suicide. The complaints include charges of wrongful death, assisted suicide, and manslaughter.
The plaintiffs argue that OpenAI did not implement adequate safeguards despite growing warnings about the risks of generative artificial intelligence models. OpenAI has yet to respond to the allegations.
