Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk revealed Tuesday that his team at xAI is developing a non-biased alternative to Wikipedia, titled Grokipedia. “We are building Grokipedia @xAI,” Musk announced on X. “Will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.”
Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson recently interviewed internet project developer and philosopher Larry Sanger on his podcast, the Tucker Carlson Show, discussing concerns about Wikipedia’s neutrality. Sanger co-founded Wikipedia in 2001 with internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales under guidelines promoting a “neutral point of view.”
Sanger alleged that Wikipedia’s editorial principles have been compromised by left-wing activists. “Larry Sanger built Wikipedia as an unbiased repository of the world’s knowledge, and then stood helplessly by as activists and intel agencies turned it into the most comprehensive propaganda op in human history,” Carlson claimed.
Sanger described “paid editing” as a widespread practice on Wikipedia, where PR firms allegedly manipulate content for financial gain despite official policies against it. He highlighted the platform’s opaque governance structure, noting that 85% of its top editorial accounts are anonymous. “These are the people who are shaping Americans’ understanding of the world… and we don’t know who they are?” Carlson questioned.
Sanger also criticized Wikipedia’s source restrictions, citing a list of approved outlets like the New York Times, CNN, and MSNBC, alongside blacklisted conservative publications such as Fox News and The Daily Mail. He argued that the platform’s bias undermines its credibility, with Tech founder David Sacks stating, “Wikipedia is hopelessly biased. An army of left-wing activists maintain the bios and fight reasonable corrections.”
The project’s implications for AI training were also raised, as Wikipedia’s prominence in search results and data sets amplifies its influence. Musk’s initiative aims to address these issues by creating a more transparent knowledge source.
