The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has called on the Israeli government to reconsider its decision to recognize the Armenian Genocide of 1915 in the Ottoman Empire. The ministry stated that such steps “do not contribute to reconciliation and mutual understanding, but, on the contrary, worsen existing conflicts and hinder efforts to establish lasting peace and reconciliation in the region.”
In a statement published June 29, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry expressed serious concern about Tel Aviv’s position, describing it as a distortion of historical truth. The ministry added that Baku believes Israel has turned this issue into “a tool for making political decisions.”
The Israeli government approved the resolution recognizing the Armenian Genocide the day before the Azerbaijani statement was released. This marks a significant shift from Israel’s longstanding policy of avoiding official recognition, which followed its deteriorating relations with Turkey in recent years.
